COLOMBIA

I got in touch with the Colombian community during my PhD while I was living in New Zealand since many Colombian refugees elect this country to start a new life in Oceania. During my stay in New Zealand I had many unanswered questions about this culture and I knew the only way to solve my doubts was to go to Colombia because it was the only way to see how the society looks like and what people’s values are. After I finished my PhD I worked all summer in a restaurant close to the beach only to collect the money to pay my fly tickets to go to Colombia. Finally, I had the chance to answer all my questions living in Bogotá. I have to say Bogotá is a very vibrant city full of art and full of events and activities to do. I can really say I was adopted by Colombians and I know from the bottom of my heart I have a family over there. Despite the difficult life conditions, Colombians are a great example of generosity, positivity and resilience. They taught to be shrewd, to enjoy simple things in life, never forget to smile, to always dance and sing because every place, even the street, is a good place where to party. I have to say this trip healed me from a lot of sadness and brought me new consciousness. I feel very grateful to Colombia for being so real and genuine, for disclosing me hidden treasures like Caño cristales, I thank Cali for teaching me to fall in love again after such a long time, my colleagues at the university for all the travels and adventures done together and, last but not least, the love of my hosts who welcomed me as a daughter. I will never forget the delicious Ajiaco or the chocolate prepared together every Sunday. I will always cherish the “Día de las Velitas” dancing in the street of my “cuadra” while drinking Poke and vino de manzana with my Colombian family.
